What's with the sudden rise in hate for pick-up trucks?

https://www.theglobeandmail. com/canada/toronto/article-pickup-trucks-are-a-plague-on-canadian-streets/
take the space out of "." and "com", it seems the auto affiliate link to globe and mails screws up the link.

Here is another link to the article, copy and paste. Apparently the above link just takes you to the Globe and mail homepage.

I read 2-3 article in just past 5 days about the hate on pick up trucks. I believe the others were strictly from Toronto. I can't find the links now. I know people usually hate on trucks but suddenly it seems anti-pickup truck articles are getting churned out at a faster pace.

Every vehicle has its use case and so do pick-up trucks. I've heard the same argument from die-hard pick-up truck fans and people who despise pick-up trucks; that "people just use them as mall crawlers and grocery getters, pick up trucks are meant for work or pulling".

I love getting grocery in the pick-up truck and occasionally haul furniture in the bed or whatever that I don't want to put inside the cab.

And this author clearly hates pickups with a passion. If it's the best selling vehicle obviously it offers something other vehicles don't.

The luxuries in the pickup trucks match those of top level SUVs with same or more room in the cab. And with a benefit of having a bed.

People say the trucks are getting larger, but so is almost every other vehicle. Extra safety features require more room and larger crumple zones.

Like many other vehicles (sport cars, luxury cars, etc) many who don't use it for work use it as a method to show how well off they are, since they tend to be expensive and cost more than average to operate. Though I'd say it's more modest than a luxury SUV. People also like to feel higher up than others, but that's all negated when everyone is driving a tall SUV/pickup.
But I don't the hate has increase any more in the past decade, if anything it's gone down now that they don't get as terrible MPG.
It's just news orgs copying each other because that's easier than coming up with fresh ideas themselves.

Maybe because a lot of pick up drivers are overly aggressive on the roads?

Just an observation, like how those that make fun of BMW owners not using turn signals.

You are correct, its literally the news agencies feeding off each other. I have read the same story 3 or 4 time in the last month, each one with a little different twist on the same thing. 'Too Big', 'Gag Hog', 'Headlights too bright'...

Not so sure about this part. I have zero desire to ever own one, never mind driving one.

Fake news...

Fake media needs clickbait, controversy ups ratings and sells.

Enjoy your truck, your life, your decisions.

From a guy who never owned a truck and has no intention of getting one in future. I support people's right to choose.

Ya, I know. I am a rare bread me thinks.

Just going for an LOL here, but the post above me has it right. If everyone just stopped worrying about what others drive, things would be much better off.

Out west
Been a truck driver for 18 years. Started because I needed a truck for the lifestyle I had, which was upgrading to a camping trailer, and 3 kids outgrowing my 2 door VW so I needed a new vehicle anyway/ As well was tierd of borrrowing peoples trucks for odd jobs.

It was a mid size Frontier, and worked well for 7 to 8 years, until it was obvious we outgrew the truck. But for living in the city, it worked well

But while owning it moved to an acreage, and needed a bigger truck due to the kids getting to big, water hauling, and another trailer upgrade

I still own that truck, and have no reason to not have it, even after moving back to the city, not camping anymore, and me basically using in the truck daily

Main reason is I have to reason to downgrade to a car. Its paid for, in great shape, no issues with it, and still use it as a truck when its needed. Like this weekend when I helped my son move, the truck was used to haul a ton of his stuff 3 hours away. I have 3 kids, this will happen more and more then next few years. So that right there is a reason enough to keep it

As a home owner, I haul things that cant fit in a car. Is it daily, nope. But when we go to Costco with it, I dont have to worry aboout stuff "fitting" like many put on here, worried of that TV or whatever will fit in their car.

Lumber from Home Depot, patio blocks, etc, etc. Im sure I can add more to the list I use the truck for

Even if my truck got totalled tomorrow, I would still own a truck. If I didmt, yes Im sure I could make things work. But we already own a small CUV for those types of uses

I have no idea why there would be any hate. Let people enjoy whatever they want?

I have my eyes on the Ford Maverick. It isn't a real truck per se but I see the appeal of being able to haul sports equipment around on the weekends without having to deal with bad fuel economy and crappy parking options

Really though, they're noticeable cars, like BMW's, but there's morons in all cars, but people can't tell Civics from Corollas so they blame the ones they recognize.

Not truck-specific, but I do keep a list of cars that I look out for and avoid:
- modified trucks with stupid stickers all over it
- frs/brz/wrx's
- old maximas/jettas/golfs
- budget-balling kids
- anything with tinted tail lights

The list goes on. More often than not, they're aggressive and unpredictable. I just keep steady, let em pass, and go on with my merry day

A regular looking pickup, I'm alright. Usual rules apply i.e. don't hide in their blindspots
When given enough time, all threads on RFD can and will go off on a tangent.

One can always tell the difference between a Civic and the "Beige" Corolla. The Corolla is the one with the dents & bad driver. :D

No, today's pkup trucks are wider than 90s' Humvee, a Millitary tactic vehicle designed with a width so as to mobile anywhere, That's not acceptable.
Every vehicle get bigger doesn't mean the biggest vehicle should get even bigger, and they get bigger because of CHEATING in CAFE rule.

Read the actual article. Author makes some really good points:

1. Very wasteful and a huge overkill to own a truck for grocery and mall runs. Makes no sense.
2. Pollution, higher consumption.
3. Low visibility, unsafe to others on the road/pedestrians.
4. Truck drivers being more aggressive and entitled on the roads.
