Where to buy cheap books (Mississauga specifically)

Would anyone know of a place around Mississauga to get some cheap books from (preferrably NorthWest Mississauga around Meadowvale/Streetsville)? They don't have to be new and nothing too specific. I'm pretty much just looking for some stuff to help fill out the bookshelf. I like mystery novels so those would be great as well as things like encyclopedias or interesting non-fiction books.

I know the library has used book sales sometimes but I looked online and they don't give any specific date and I don't see any book sale happening at my local library (the one in Meadowvale Town Centre).

i think something we all have in common anywhere in Canada, is flea markets on Sundays. i get all my books there, anywhere from $1 each, to 3 for $5, depending on seller/age of book (you can also get some of your money back by selling them back to the seller after reading them  ).

Buying used and new books on amazon or similar sites seems much cheaper and convenient than hagling in some bookstore

It depends on what site you use. Sure you can find some REALLY cheap prices on used books, but sometimes the shipping charges absolutely kills any deal that would have been had. Especially if you are buying from a person/store within Canada as I feel Canada Post charges us an arm and a leg!

Personally, I've been using a US-based store called Thriftbooks.com
They sell really cheap used books and have the best shipping rates to Canada that I've found at just $2.99.

I've made 5 orders from the site so far and received 4 of them. So far I am impressed. I managed to get some hardcover books in 'very good' condition for a few dollars each(before shipping) and from the looks of them, I doubt they were ever read at all.

^ Wow that site is perfect. $3 shipping to Canada on their site....can you get charged customs on that even if it's an order under $20 or $30?

The other person reminded me that Thrift Stores sell books as well.

There used to be quite a few used bookstores, I can't really find any nearby nowadays so will try out the library sales as well. It's nice if you're buying a used book to see it in person.

EDIT: Oh it's $2.99/book not that for the whole order so around $5 for most books. Oh well, still cheap.

Any Value Village has a books area. Usually $1 or $2 per book - buy 4 get 5th free. Sometimes there are coupons in your flyers for $10 off $30 purchase there.

Another option is to look on Kijiji and Craiglist for book lots to pay or for free. Also try Freecycle and ask for books. I've gotten alot of books there over the years if you aren't overly picky.

Best of luck.

Usually I do most of my book shopping at the annual mississauga symphony used book sale at the sheridan mall on erin mills and the QEW, but that's in september. Then I finish off the year with the black friday and boxing day sales at bookcloseouts.ca / .com

^ Coincidence you mention that because I just found out about it last night and they're holding a sale on May 12th (Sat) at the Sheridan Centre (I'm assuming they're also having a sale in September). So good timing.

Details are here if anyone's interested:

This sale limited to romance, mystery, scifi, general fiction
Summer Reading Book Sale

I also found another one happening in Mississauga for historical books being held by the Streetsville Historical Society. I have found very little info for it but this one won't be as big because the log house from the outside at least doesn't look very big and it's just historical books so probably not the $1-4 types.

The Historical Society is also asking that you consider a donation of your gently used books, DVD's and VHS for their book sale May 25th which can be dropped off at the Leslie Log House, 4415 Mississauga Rd., any Wednesday or Sunday from 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.. Please call Bernice to arrange for your donations to be picked up - 905-826-7198

Goodwill is good for books, some locations better than others. Fridays are usually 50% off, so a regular paperback is then $1.49.

Each Mississauga Library has their own sale at the entrance.

Good luck!

I found a store in Mississauga called Close Out King that sells brand new books for $1 and $2. That's where I get them from. Some are a little outdated though, I am warning you. But for a $1, I can't complain. They have children's books, novels, cook books, fitness books, biographies and more. Hope this helps! The address for the store is 2562 Stanfield Road (Tomken and Dundas). Have fun!
