Where can I get threaded black pipe for cheap

I want to do something like this in my living room but after pricing out the pipe and connectors at HD I am reconsidering.
Can I get this pipe and fittings for less somewhere else?

Amre? Looks like old school gas pipe. Gas fitter supply? Old school plumbing shop? Home reusables?
The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten....

Check with a scrap metal yard.

I find Home Hardware has cheaper prices on this stuff than Depot. And I think Depot is less for the pipe itself and Lowes is cheaper for the elbows etc, but I may have that backwards.

In any case, this pipe is pricey as metal is pricey.

Is this for cats or structural in some way? You might be able to use schedule 636 white pipe and paint it for less money if you attach it to the way more?

Also, from box store you can buy longer sections and make them cut it down and thread it for WAY WAY less than the standard sizes come.

That's the key, buying a 20' length is far cheaper....cut/thread there but the guy might balk at this many cuts.

Let him balk. Even at $1/ct will be cheaper I bet.

lol if it's just for looks, just JB weld the fittings on, why botter cutting thread.
Looks like black iron pipes, that's no joke, not your crappy galvanized steel pipes

Not sure if you can get the pipe but you can get fittings at Princess Auto.

That won't work.
The OD if the pipe is larger than the ID of the fittings.

I second checking out Princess Auto.
I've seen it there.

Also TSC has it, although I doubt pricing is better.
You might get lucky though.

Sometimes Princess Auto has dies on sale.
That might be worth it, if you can figure out a technique with something like a pipe wrench vs. buying the proper handle.

Sorry to bump an old thread but I'm also looking for something similar. I can get the pipe by nowhere will cut and thread it. Home Depot, Rona, home hardware all said they got rid of their machines a few years back. Anyone know a place to get this done reasonably cheap?

Don't have an answer but I just bought the fittings off the shelf at Home Depot. Yes, it ain't cheap, but it's not worth my time. It costed me about $40 worth of fittings and pipes for my washroom two-tier shelf.

Plumbing supply like Noble will do it. Reasonably cheap? Probably not. You could rent a threader and do it yourself but I'm not sure that will save you any money.

My recall seeing a black pipe cutter and threader in the isle at my local HD within the last year.

Was this the oakville home depot? I may check it out tomorrow if so. The Burlington one does not cut it. I need 2 14" pieces so its hard to work around the length as they come in 12 and 18. I was hoping to either cut down 2 18's or cut a 28 in half.

Black pipe is not cheap. It's rated for gas - it's not trivial stuff. I've made a number of live-edge / bowling lane topped tables/benches/wall shelves. Assume any small project will cost $100.

People don't use it because it's cheap - they use it because it's bullet proof or it's the look they want.

Oh, and it's also horribly messy. The pipes and fittings are all coated with crap. I washed mine with hot soapy water / scrubbed with scotchbrite pads etc before putting it together.

Yes, in Oakville. I can't remember which one (speers or winston churchill), but call ahead to avoid wasting time.

Nice, I did something similar (lower load than yours) with copper pipe, mostly because of the ease of cutting and joining.

Here it is. I heated the whole thing to give it a neat bluish colour that my daughter liked.
