Why can't consoles just play nice?

http://www.redbull.com/en/games/stories ... -interview

“We understand that these sorts of things take time, but we’re doing whatever we can to try and push the ball along. For example, we’ve built Rocket League with the idea of having cross-network play as a ‘pie in the sky’ feature, and once we got it working with Xbox One and PC, we expanded on that. So now, all we need to do honestly, is flip a switch. It’s a virtual switch – not a big button or anything – but if it ever came to the point where we had permission to do cross-platform on all platforms immediately, we could have it up and running within a business day. It would be very, very quick. We’ve made the game in preparation for that eventuality, so that when it happens, people can come in and experience it immediately. Our engineers are really, really good, and they spent a long time making it, so now we’re just waiting and hoping for that opportunity.”

Just make it happen, we've been waiting long enough. Where's the downside here?

No idea. RL has had PC and PS4 cross-platform play since launch. I think to incorporate full cross-platform play between XB1/PS4/PC they need permission from both Microsoft and Sony and I guess that's probably more difficult to achieve.

Literally the whole reason for my post lol

Rocket League is saying they can do it in a day if they had permission. So Microsoft/Sony are keeping consumers away from something beneficial - I'd like to know their reasoning for doing so.

Once I let one of you hoodlems on my property then you all will expect it. I can't have all you ruffians running a muck on my peaceful space.

Twix commercials all over again. Look at all the different chat apps that do the exact same thing but don't play nice.

One of the main reasons that people bought an Xbox One this generation is because it is what their friends bought.

If they could buy the PS4 and play/communicate with their friends on the Xbox One, a lot less Xbox Ones would have been sold.

Reason is, everyone wants a closed eco-system. Microsoft has announced that Xbox live is now open for cross platform play, so far no one else has responded.

PS4 and PC cross play for Street fighter. PS4 and PC cross play for Rocket League.

Seems like Sony is fine with it. Not sure the situation with Microsoft.

Most consumers WONT benefit from cross-play with PC for those games where keyboard and mouse will give a major advantage (and most consumers are on console). Reason why Blizzard won't do it. I'm sure PC gamers would want it because of the low player counts, more players would benefit them, but not sure console games would benefit for those games where they will be at a disadvantage.

Rocket League is cross play between XB1 and PC, PC and PS4. So, PC can play with either console, either console can play with PC, but both consoles can't play with each other.

Stupid.

Oooh I see. Didn't know that.

Maybe they don't view PC so much as a direct competitor or something, whereas the opposing console is?

Probably the same reason Apple and Nintendo behave the way they do.

Ha, took only 8 posts to turn it around to something about Nintendo. The Sony/Microsoft bias is real.

And I'm the troll..

Its totally anti-consumer but it doesnt make any sense for the console leader in sales to open up there platform to cross play. Microsoft refused to do it last generation and Sony seems to be the one holding it up this generation.

Here is an example of why,
Lets say Im looking at consoles and I want to play RL with my freinds and 4 of my freinds have PS4 and 2 of them have XB1 if cross play is a thing it doesnt matter which console Im going to purchase but if it isnt then I'll pick up the more popular one.

Not to mention they are totally different networks so it doesn't even really benefit the consumer that much. I cant play RL with my freinds on PC if Im on PS4. Its not setup to handle that sort of "Cross-play" and its just random MM which is helpful for a game with a small community but makes very little difference to the player.

Huh? You can play with PS4 players right now, even friends, in private matches and regular queue.

You just cant queue with a friend at this point, or party up.

A couple years ago, I played Black Ops II on Steam's free multiplayer weekend using an Xbox 360 controller against presumably players that mostly used Mouse and Keyboard.

My dropoff in KDR was not that significant. I was around 1.22 on PC using an XBox 360 controller versus 1.30 on console using a PS3 controller.
