Why steal someone's plates??

My mom woke up this morning to find her back plate missing- she called police and filled out the paper work etc went to service Ontario and got new plate.
The cops told her about 10 people have come in over past couple days and had same issue.
Is this just a prank by some idiot kids or is someone trying to run a scam with stolen plates.

FYI replacement cost is $20

To do a crime. But are you sure it was stolen? Maybe it just fell off. When was the last time you checked to see if the bolts were tight?

Mine were stolen back in March 2011 in the middle of the night without me knowing it. The person put them on their car and stole gas. The gas station called the police and police came to my door at around 2am. We filed a report with them but we never heard back..

Get an anti-theft licence plate kit....harder for someone to steal. Should be around $5 or so....special screws I think. I need to buy a kit for my truck.

This would act as a theft-deterrent, but if they really wanted to take your plate they will. Usually the security screw sets are just torx or pig nose screws.

Maybe they are collecting it to display in their room. Like a trophy. Many years ago people would steal badges.

When I was a bored teen 20-25 years ago, swapping plates was all the rage.

Buy some 3M VHB tape.
Add 3M VHB behind the plate where the plate contacts the car.
Screw in plate to car.
Watch someone try to take off plate with huge chunk of 3M VHB tape behind the plate stuck to the car.
???
Profit.
