Why the X5 was dead on the road?

a 6 months old 2022 x5 40i with around 8k km.

got a set of new tires at a local tire store Friday noon. Then drove to pick up my daughter in the afternoon. on the way home, the steering light came on saying increased pressure, then the engine light came on, then the "power supply" warning popped up. I was in rush hours traffic on a big road and it was 10 minutes away from home, I wanted to drive home first then check the car.

Unfortunately, the car was totally dead in the middle of a HUGE intersection when I was trying to make a left turn. Seemed like total power loss. the SOS button didn't even work because no power. it was scary. Thought I would be hit by cars. called 911 for help and called tow truck. Fortunately nobody got hurt. The car was towed to the nearest bmw dealer.

The dealer will work on it next week. I will see what's going on.

I am just wondering what caused the total power loss on the road! it's so dangerous. and this is a new car. nothing I did to it except the tire changes in the morning. I talked to some friends. One said the damage on the wheel speed sensor could cause this kind of problem. I went to the tire store they said no way they would damage the wheel speed sensor and the damage on the wheel speed sensor won't cause power loss.

the dealer's diagnoise will be final. just scrathing my head and trying to figure out what's going on while waiting for the report. Does anyone have this kind of experience? a total power loss on the road is just unbelievable!

one more thing, the car lost all power. then stayed there for 20 minutes, then the tow truck driver tried to push the start button again , the power is back, but the engine light was still on.

well, another one morning thing. :) the dealer called me yesterday after they submitted a work order. they told me they found a recall for my car on their system for something like programming. I didn't receive any recall letter from BMW. could this programming issue caused the problem?

One of the wheel/tire techs probably cut a power cable or damaged the car in some way.

Stop going to cheap tire and wheel shops for a luxury vehicle. There are far too many electronics on new cars these days.

they are not that cheap. I tried to buy tires from Costco but they sold out the tires I want. the store I went to is 4.9 out of 5 on google review so I went there.

Pretty much impossible to say given how complex cars, especially luxury ones, are today. Wheel speed sensor could cause limp mode but not complete power lose, maybe a intermittent short somewhere?

Let us know what was the cause when you have it.

must be the ECU (software issue perhaps) as it controls all the electronics in the car.

Costco I don’t trust if I drive high end car. Costco is volume based so they don’t do a good job. It’s like buying a ferrarai and putting 87 gas in it. Or buy 3000 dollar rims and put Chinese brand tires on it.

Would you recommend tire stores I can go? I have been going to costco for tires for over 10 years. I searched a lot, I know some popular tires stores like simply tire, easy tire...Are they good enough for high end cars?

It could be coincidental that the car died after you got your tires changed. Can someone explain to me how one could possibly relate to the other?

OP did not go to Costco. he/she went to "a local tire store " after Costco did not have his tires

I was like you. I thought tires are simple. tire pressure sensor was the only one I knew. Now I know there are more sensors even on the rims. like wheel speed sensor. But as someone said above a damaged wheel sensor could cause limping not power loss. So it seems nobody can know until the dealer gets diagnosis report.

a little bit mentally traumatized. If I were driving on the highway, I would be sleeping in a coffin today because of the sudden stop of the car!

Why so dramatic man. Flats could happen anywhere as well. Also 911 is for emergencies, first step is to call BMW roadside assist…

If you haven't already told them, I wouldn't tell them you just had your tires changed just in case they try to pin it on the tire shop. If they do find out the reason for the dead car is because someone cut something while putting in new tires, then you've just voided your warranty with them but let them find out on their own because my experience in the past with dealerships is they'll try to pin it on something just to worm out of warranty.

Wheel Speed Sensors are on the hubs, not the rims.

I didn't tell the dealer about the tire changes. But I suppose they can see since the tires are not the original ones.

Just curious, why did you replace 6 month old tires with only 8,000 kms on them?

it was an emergency. the car was in the middle of a big intersection with rush hour traffic! I called BMW roadside first. they told me to call 911 for protection while waiting for tow truck. The police even said the situation was pretty dangerous he tried several times to get us out of the car and move to the roadside...the police car stopped behind me to prevent cars from hitting me from behind. It was on major mackenzie road, limit 70, many people drive over 80!

So if you have a situation like this, don't hesitate to call 911 for protection as the police told me!

I don't like run flat tires. I always change to traditional tires

It’s pretty traumatic if you bought a new car and it’s like this. I really doubt the cars will fail like this. Some sensor was damaged when someone was working on it or cut some wires by mistake etc.

I suppose the dealer can pull up the code and see where it went wrong.

I never had a new car that behave like this and it shouldn’t.
