wise.com - currency exchange

Hi all,

I just checked CAD to EUR rate on wise.com. Using “add EUR” option I see “Guaranteed rate (for 78 hours)”. 78 hours may be due to the weekend.

1. If I place an order now how long do I have to go to my CAD bank account to initiate the bill payment? Do they need to receive the funds in 78 hours or can I initiate it on the 77th hour?

2. If I don’t have to initiate the transfer immediately, if I check the rate 2 days later, and it is better, then can I ignore the first order and just fullfill the second order, keep repeating until the rate goes worse than the last time? Part of this question is do I need to cancel the order actively once I decide not to fulfill, i.e. I’m obligated to fulfill all orders until I cancel them.

3. Before I can use the “convert” option, I need to transfer some CAD, to convert CAD to EUR, correct? (i.e. I have to wait my CAD funds to arrive at Wise before initiating an order.) Does “send” option also work the same way?

4. It seems that Wise charges for converting CAD to EUR is 0.51%, fees for adding is 0.52%, not sure what the rate is for sending, plus fixed amount for each transaction. I would like to hear which Wise option (Add, Convert, or Send) you prefer and why.

Thank you :)

How many hours or days did you wait before cancelling?

Did you always cancel first before ordering again (so you won't have to deal with double orders)?

Were you Adding, Converting, or Sending?

Thanks.

There's two methods, a direct transfer (for one-off transfers) and the multi-currency account (for more frequent transfers).

For the direct transfer, you enter the amount and the payment method on the home page and it shows you all the fees. You lock in the rate when you set up the transfer, then you pay.

For the multi-currency account, the rate to add funds depends on payment method and can be as low as 0 for direct deposit or a flat 95 cents for bill payment, the rate to convert CAD to EUR is 0.52%, and the rate to send out EUR is a flat 41 Euro cents.

As for which method is preferable, it depends. If I already have some funds in Wise, maybe in a different foreign currency, I use the multi-currency account. If not, I just do a direct transfer from CAD. If I know I'll need to do a transfer fast, I keep some funds in the multi-currency account so I don't need to wait a few days for them to arrive in there.

If you have an EQ Bank account, then I find that's the best way. It's basically a one step process where the funds are immediately transferred to wise from the savings account. I've made transactions to Hong Kong and China that are completed in less than a day.
