Apple iPhone 8 - Koodo - $0 Tab M, $615 device balance, $400 prepaid CC, $50 with trade-in, can sign up & cancel

Deal Link:
Retailer:
WOW Mobile
Spotted this in WOW's Black Friday deals, and looks like a hot price even for sign up + cancel folks who miss the old days of Koodo.

Summary/Notes:

  • You sign up for a 2 yr contract for a Koodo iPhone 8, Tab Medium, requires hard credit hit/new account
  • You bring any old phone to WOW Mobile for minimum $50 trade in value (could be only for accessories as tab is $0, YMMV)
  • When signing your contract, your device balance will be $615 - you're getting all sorts of sign up credits from Koodo, but those will be clawed if you cancel
  • You will get a $400 prepaid CC from WOW Mobile on sign up, and because it's provided by WOW, it's not clawed back if you cancel
  • Once you get home with the phone, either port out using a prepaid SIM, or call Koodo to cancel
  • You'll eventually get a final invoice charging you the full device balance ($615) plus tax, plus activation fee, plus service

Math:

  • + $0 up front tab cost (Tab M)
  • + $615 device balance
  • + $35 activation fee (waived in 1-2 bill cycles if you wait)
  • + Tax on above
  • + Few $ for 1 day cell plan/service before cancelling
  • - $400 prepaid CC
  • - $50 trade-in value
  • = Approx $270 to $290 net cost for new in box, unlocked iPhone 8

So far the best deal that I've seen was with TMS when they were offering $550 worth of PC points for the same phone with Rogers ($615 buy outright price).
The points are potentially worth a lot more during bonus redemption for those that dabble in it.

Similar WOW and Costco deals on iphone 8 were already posted recently.

Agreed. Better through Rogers than Koodo for the same cancellation fee.

TMS website says 400k pts. Is there any 150k bonus pts for today? How about old phone 50k pts trade-in?
Have too many phones... This is how I limit my monthly phone payment.
Public Mobile $36 5GB, $12 250MB, 2x $7 50min/50text, Fido $5 4GB data only plan with a free tablet,
Zoomer $36 loyalty 4GB plan, $0 FPL home phone. Have a better and better day!

What's the device credit that you have pay back for canceling?

so not really a deal, $270 to $290 for iPhone 8, that's about same price it was going for last year.

There is a$35 activation fee from Koodo as well so cancelling right away may not get you a reduction of $35 on your final bill.

Last year, I got the iPhone 8 on medium tab, $35 activation fee, and 150k PC points. I kept the plan and phone but I could have cancelled and the final price would still be around $300.

Signing up and cancelling from wow may or may not result in a blacklist from future wow purchases too?

I see a few BNIB iPhone 8 for sale in Kijiji too.

Looking at your math I dont see where you added in the $360 tab medium you would also have to pay off?

The device balance consists of the medium tab and phone credit.

Thanks for posting, OP. Decent deal still for an iPhone only 2 years old.
I'm going to the convenient store to pick me up a pack of cigarettes...

I was at Wow Erin Mills and they are offering 200 GC and 200 for in-store purchase. Seems like this has been implemented by the local staff as the website still says 400 GC

If you buy and cancel it will be $615 + $35 (activate charge) + HST = $735 + 1 day plan bill

Deducting the $400GC, you are paying around $335 for iPhone 8 (with a credit hit if you care and probably blacklisted by Wow for sometime).

Getting accessories for an old phone is if you have an old phone that does not worth $50.
This is still a good deal if you want an iPhone 8 !!
