30GB 5G + Unlt. talk/text — $55

Hey guys —

Last month I posted about a data-only deal with unlimited throttled 512Kbps internet and a trivial amount of 5G from a company that seems to be an MVNO on Telus. The plan was neat because it was the cheapest way to get unlimited 512Kbps. At the time, it was $25 (tax and things like e911 included in price) which came out to about $21 pre-tax/fees in my province (NB). They've since raised the price for new customers to $30. There were a couple other plans on their website but nothing super interesting.

Upon looking at it again it seems there's one other slightly interesting plan (I'm not sure if it wasn't there last time or if I didn't notice it). They're offering 30GB of 5G, then unlimited 512Kbps, plus unlimited talk/text for $75 month-to-month… or (if you scroll down to the bottom of the page), $65/month, again tax and e911 included, if you pay 6 months at a time. Your "real price" (i.e. the price that you pay before taxes and fees) obviously differs by province. Here in New Brunswick it comes out to about ~$55-56/month. Depending on your specific province/territory it'll be slightly lower or higher.

This seems to more or less be Telus' 30GB Peace of Mind plan, which is listed at $80 (~$92 in NB). It's not that much better of a price than other plans we've seen in the last month or two — for example, last month Bell was offering 30GB for $65 (~$73 in NB) for those who are Bell residential internet/TV customers — but for people who don't mind switching around for the best deal, or are looking for a plan to cite to their current carrier's retention department to negotiate a better rate, this deal may be worth noting.

Also — my thread I linked to above had a bunch of discussion about hotspotting/throttling on the data-only plan, and my understanding is it would essentially apply to this plan as well, i.e. you can hotspot the first 30GB but then it cuts you off.

Hope this helps!

Edit: Spelling.

Not much of savings for a MVNO, best go the winback route and get the standard 25GB/45$ plan.

Agreed. Technically, it's the cheapest 30GB plan in Canada. In practice, just get a 25GB plan for a lot cheaper.

Okay, actually, I sorta take that back. I got out my calculator and did the exact math Nerd Face In New Brunswick, $45 is $52.72 post-tax and post-e911 fee. If something is $65 post-tax and post-e911 fee, the sticker price would $55.68. Meaning, you pay less than $3 for 5GB more of data, or about $0.60/GB. That's actually a *really* good price, and shows you how sticker prices can be deceiving.

They keep offering more gb and high prices. Some people like myself are looking for low gb and lowest possible pricing. I've got wifi everywhere i go.

I actually think this is a decent deal, I'm getting 55 for 20gb through Koodo paying bc taxes brings it up to 62ish so for 3 dollars more getting an extra 10gb is pretty solid. Thanks op for highlighting this.

Same thing here. I have the plan I posted about last month. I don't need a bunch of high-speed data. For $25 I have unlimited 3G data (fast enough for Netflix) plus free unlimited U.S./Canada calling with Google Voice on that data. I don't get why people are so enamored bigger gig plans.

You cannot compare 52.72 after tax to 55.68 before tax. you should compare after tax 52.72 to 65 ,or before tax 45 to 55.68, it is more than $10 not $3 for 5G more data

People are different.. Some people like to stream lots of video. I know a bunch of people who watch videos over lunch, every lunch. Not everyone has WIFI everywhere (construction/oilfield workers ect).

For me, I spend every weekend out in the country with the only internet available being cellular. I like having data I can share with the family while there. Or remote work if I go out in the middle of the week.

That is not a phone plan. It is for tablet use.

Fine print at bottom:
-Intended for tablet use only. Traditional network phone calls and texts are not included and are billed at prohibitive rates ($0.50 per SMS and $2.50 per minute). Incoming SMS are free.

It's useless

According to the "How it works" page, it says
Once you fill out your information, we’ll send you your SIM card via express mail. Your credit card will be charged right away and your billing cycle will commence.
So it seems that we need to pay before we can actually activate the SIM card and use their service?

Maybe for you.

LOTS of people are using VOIP over tablet plans to great success.

The incoming SMS is actually really good since most modern tablet plans block all texting.

Forgive me, I'm a moron. These calculations made sense in my head last night!

"It's useless," he says, as I use its data to compose a response to him after watching several hours of Netflix, after having fallen asleep to soft ASMR at 320Kbps which played the whole night, and checking which of my various torrents have finished downloading, having already downloaded over 35GB of them this cycle, and looking forward to calling to chat with friends for several hours tonight over Google Voice.

It might be useless to you — that doesn't make it useless.

I don't know if you noticed this but the world doesn't revolve around you.

What's useless for you isn't useless for the rest of the world just because you say so.

Go look at the dedicated thread for that deal.

I use it on my secondary phone and have had absolutely no issues or extra charges whatsoever.

It's essentially $25 for 3GB of 5G with unlimited throttled data afterwards.

Prepaid service reuqries payment before the service starts although on the $25 plan once you get the ball rolling they're able to automatically withdraw the funds my card each billing cycle as of it was postpaid.

Thank you for explaining. I didn't notice it's a prepaid service, sorry. However it says the billing cycle starts the moment when the credit card get charged instead of the activation, is that normal for prepaid services from other Canadian carriers? Why do I have to pay for the service when I don't even get the sim card yet?

I used to be with Public Mobile (which I think is prepaid), the cycle started from the day I activated the sim card rather than the day I purchased the SIM card.
