ylod of death is impossible to fix forever unless you replace the problem part.

mtech and probably walmart will just continue to do the same and reflow your system. Your probably wasting another $50 and better off buying a new system unless there is something on that 40gb you would like to retain.

that's not the end!!!! the ps3 broke down 3 weeks later. at least he fixed it because he offers a 1 month warranty. i don't know what the problem was the second time (but i had yellow light again) because my friend picked up the ps3 for me.

but ladies and gentleman, that's not the ****ing end because the ps3 broke down again after i played for about 10 minutes just now. needless to say, i am so very angry and i registered for redflagdeals just so i could warn you guys about going to mtechservice at ocorrnor and eglington or wherever the hell it is. for 150 to fix the ps3 i would have just bought a new ps3 slim to replace my 40 gb version. (it's only been about 2 and a half months of rarely playing the ps3 since the first time it happend)

there is a repair shop inside the walmart at scarborough town centre that i will be taking my ps3 to tomorrow. they quoted me 50$ but at this point i might just buy a new ps3.

Damn that sucks. Thanks for the heads up.

My PS3 works fine now and the fan stays quiet at the XMB. It only goes to a higher level when I start playing a game... I'm not sure what could be different but maybe a little bit of luck helps with these things...

Hi mtechservice, how's it going?

What is the "problem part" that would need to be replaced? I ask because my PS3 is an old 80GB with backwards compatibility and I don't wanna give that up.

Where exactly is this place in the Wal*Mart STC that I keep hearing about? I can't picture where it is.

But anyway, I'm actually pretty happy that I got a PS3 Slim after this "temporary fix", mainly because I was always intending on using Data Tranfer Utility after my PS2-compatible 80GB PS3 YLOD'd. I know it's quite a bit of money to spend just on saving my save files, but eh, I can afford it.

The one thing that really made me happy with my new PS3 Slim was that the Wi-Fi in this system appears to be twice as strong as my old PS3's Wi-Fi. I'm consistently getting 80% signal from my basement to the second floor now, and my DualShock3's bluetooth doesn't interfere with the signal (wtf was up with that anyway? lol).

Hey,

Ps3 MGS4 BC bundle died last week. Not yellow light, it will stay in standby, then when i turn it on, it goes to green light for half a second then dies. I figured that it was a PSU issue so I brought it to this guy in brampton off kennedy north of steeles. He put a new PSU in it for me while I was there to test it, but it still died after half a second. I left it with him to try reflowing, which I do not think he did, he said that there is a short circuit somewhere and he could not find it.
he is at 9 stafford

not sure if anyone else has had any experience with him. nice guy, just not too sure what to make of his service.

hence i dont know what to do now. i will bring it for a second opinion to maybe gamerama. see what they say

EDIT: as a quick follow up, I just spoke to sony canada and the total cost for shipping and repair is $203. Just good to have as a reference point for other repairs in the city

thanks for the thread

So my PS3 died again and I bit the bullet and got a 160GB slim. I'm curious tho... how long did the Data Transfer Utility take for you? Mine is still sitting here in the middle of the process and I heard that it can take a very long time. It's already been 2 hrs now.... I actually cancelled my first attempt cause I thought it had frozen (had to reformat the drive again before giving it another try)

Arghh..my 60gb PS3 just died too. :(

Has anyone tried having it repaired in and around Pacific Mall at all? I figure I'd give them a try. Not sure if buying a slim is an option. I really want my backward capability :(

I'm seriously saddened about this haha

I feel your pain!
People can correct me if I'm wrong but I think that the reflow solution is only a temporary fix. Fixing it this way will get you some life out of your system but it will die again. I have heard that reballing your system is the only way to fix it but I'm not sure where you could get that reliably get that done.

Bought a heat gun today and decided to try to fix it myself with youtube tutorials. It all worked out because my PS3 is now up and running! Saved myself a few hundred bucks! :D

The process was much easier than I thought it would be. I know a reflow isn't a permanent solution, but you guys should definitely try it out!

Well, I spent a lot of time deleting mostly everything I could to get it under 8GB (since I had a thumb drive of that size). I got it to around 9.5GB, but then at that point I read somewhere (probably the official Playstation site) that Backup Utility doesn't transfer copy-protected saves.

Data Transfer Utility was the way to go for me at that point, and 9.5 GB took roughly fifteen to twenty minutes for me. It annoying to have to Deactivate all my PSN accounts and update the firmware in order to start the process, though. How much data did you try transferring?

Thanksnon advance!

That name sounds familiar...if its the company I'm thinking of, I'd avoid them at all costs.

Hi guys,

Bad review on MTechService from me as well. I originally had the YLOD on my original 60gb about 7 months ago. Took it into Mtech and he repaired it infront of me, gave me a new heat sink and all was good. This lasted till October (last month). Got the YLOD again, so took it in. This time he said its the PSU and replaced that for me. Right now i'm staring at my YLOD-d ps3 again so came on RFD to warn people and what do I find lol.

So yeah def don't take it to this guy. What do you guys suggest I do? Try to get it repaired again or just buy a new ps3?

Six months doesn't sound too bad. But I think any time your PS3 YLOD's, you should probably Data Transfer Utility everything to a new PS3. The fixes are always going to be a "band-aid" temporary solution that would keep it running until you have everything ready to transfer. I know that now after my experiences.

Another thing about the MTechService that I feel I need to complain about is the guy is pretty rude and doesn't really listen what you're trying to tell him. He'll keep on pushing you to do what HE wants you to do until you give in because he's wasting your time by not listening to you. And at that point you've already given him your money.

Live and learn. :o

Thought i might as well sign up and post my experience...

I took my 40 gig ps3 to JH computers, located at 5100 Dundas st roughly 2 months ago for a problem on my ps3 (YLOD). I was under the assumption it would cost me 40 bucks to fix it (after previously trying 3 times to fix it myself and not being able to keep it working for over a week). I get in there and the guy tells me that it will be 70 dollars because i have "tampered" it, blah blah blah.
I agree to pay and leave my ps3.
After a week and a half i hear from them that my ps3 has been fixed, so i go grab it.
I bring it home and realize that my call of duty: mw 2 is NOT inside the system (and i was pretty sure the game was there before my ps3 yloded).
After i call them and tell them that my game was there, he tells me they "forgot" to give it to me, because "every time the ps3's get fixed they take the games out"
I decide to play Uncharted 2, and after not more than 3 hours of play my ps3 ylod's again!!!!
I take it back, considering they had given me a 30 day warranty and i ask them to fix it again.....
Fast forward 30 days of them not calling me, and i decide to show up at their store saying its UNACCEPTABLE from them not to have call me or let me know when my ps3 would be fixed.
The gentleman named "Ken", who i believe runs/owns the store, tells me he'll take care of it now, and tells me to come back by 2 pm (i showed up at 11 am to claim where my ps3 was), that he will be back at like 1:30 max, so by 2 pm i could pick it up
This means that till that moment, my ps3 was sitting at their store and they had not even considered fixing them (they outsource the fixing to someone who they claim to be a sony expert who fixes them, blah blah blah).

I decide to come back that day at 2 pm (mind you all the trips back and forth i had to do for a 70 dollar repair on my ps3) and as soon as i arrive to the store he tells me that he will be late because he has to go to court to pay some speeding tickets he had because it was his last day to claim them.....UNREAL, this guy not only has my money, my broken ps3, but also has the balls to just tell me he will deal with his speeding tickets before bringing back my ps3....
He brings the ps3 back, and the ps3 turns on, but we didn't try any games. By then it was around 3 pm...
i was in a rush so i leave....
I get home, put a game inside and realize it is turning on, but it ISN'T READING DISKS..... this guy fried my lens.... tried a dvd, bluray movie, and several games and none of them are being read....
I call him and he says he doesn't know what the problem is. Tells me he'll deal with it whenever he has time... meanwhile he grabs this 16 year old kid who's in gr 11 doing co-op to take a look at the ps3 where he tells me the problem is with the software on the ps3, not on the lens.... he makes ME call sony, who tells me the problem is obviously the lens, not software.... after denying the problem, i ask him to please give me a working ps3.....
he tells me i can wait till someone brings one in, and he'll call me as soon as that happens (meaning he was gonna screw someone else over by swapping ps3's as soon as someone brought one).
I told him its unacceptable, and demand him to fix it. He tells me he had been doing me a favour the whole time by trying to help me, and he refuses to help me anymore, claiming that the YLOD problem was FIXED and that it is not their problem that the ps3 isn't working.
He kicks me out of the store, without my money, and i had to call the cops so they would help me get my money back. As soon as they came he because super nice and says he won't have a problem returning me the 70 dollars and giving me back my BROKEN ps3 which now has a more serious problem, A BROKEN LENS......

Anyway, i will never ever deal with this crook, who told the cops a technician assessed the ps3 and it was software (a 16 year old high school kid).
I recommend everyone never to do business with these guys.
Name of the company "JH Computers"
name of the asian guy i dealt with: Ken H

Terrible experience....

anyone knows of any good cheap place that can fix my lens?
or is it just not worth it?
how much does it cost to fix it?
thanks

I joined YLOD exclusive club yesterday :(
After doing some research, it appears that there aren't any permanent fix (reflowing) for this issue. Please let me know if I'm wrong.

Any recommendations on good & reasonably priced servicing shop in Vancouver/Richmond area? I found two in the area -
1. playtime service (http://www.playtimeservice.com/ps3repairs.html)
2. West Coast Electronics

I want to know whether anyone has experience with these guys. Thanks a lot!

My brother fix his PS3 4 months ago following couple videos and instructions from internet, still running like new.

One of the best instructions he follows was this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_Ic1_TY-GU&feature=fvsr

Of course this if the problem you having is overheat....otherwise repair with a TEch will be ur best bet.
