Your Dumbest Sales Staff Stories

I will start it off - I have 2 tales to recount.

Years ago - Richmond Hill ON - Weston Produce grocery store - Fresh Romaine Lettuce (not romaine hearts in a bar coded bag) on sale.
Cashier picks up the produce bag and is looking at it from all angles and it seems pretty obvious she can't figure out what it is.
She turns to me and says "This is one of those Romanian Lettuces isn't it?"
I reply "It's called a Romaine Lettuce - People in Romania like many in Eastern Europe tend to eat more root vegetables".

This past week - I visit a big box hardware store to pick up some clearance Karcher pressure washer accessories.
I ask the staffer in the department to assist me as the items I am looking for don't seem to be in the pressure washer area.
I hand the staffer printed screen shots from their website showing product/SKU/stock level for her store.
Staffer logs into the PC in her area and types "Karachi Pressure Washer" and of course nothing comes up.
I explained to her that Karachi is a city in Pakistan - the brand we are looking for is Karcher.
I get a blank look from the staffer.
She can't find any of the items - so I ask her to go get help. She disappears.
After 10 mins of waiting I get fed up and go to the Customer Service counter and ask for help.
Staffer walks with me to the pressure washer area, sees nothing of the items that I am looking for and says "I guess we don't have any of the items"
Another staffer happens by and also looks and even goes to the back to check - comes back and says "The online stock levels must be wrong as we don't have the items and if you need more help ask (and he points to the first staff person Ms Karachi Pressure Washer - who by now has come back to her work area) she's the Department Head".

Yes well...this is extremely common nowadays. People who work as sales associates at these types of big box hardware stores may never have even used the products that they are selling......so they don't know the brands, ins and outs of how to operate the product or the parts related to the product (fittings, extensions etc.)

It's why many contractors/pros prefer places like Home Hardware where they tend to have more qualified staff.....

Absolutely correct - The staff at the Home Hardware store in Oak Ridges ON (the north end of Richmond Hill) are pleasant and know their stuff.

At a Japanese restaurant, I ordered noodles with oysters and got noodles with duck. I point out the mistake to the waitress, who takes a long look at my bowl and says, "those are oysters." Like, lady, these two things aren't hard to tell apart...

IMO you see this quite regularly where sales staff do not know how to make change without the assistance of the till computer or a calculator.

Example:

If the computer/till says $10.23 owing, you hand the cashier $20 and a quarter but before you could get the quarter out, they punched in $20 and hit "change" which now says $9.75. They stand there puzzed what to do with the quarter....sometimes they hand the quarter back to you and give you $9.75 => instead of giving you $10 bill.

They are so used to using a machine, they cannot do simple math.
We're all bozos on the bus until we find a way to express ourselves...

Failure is always an option...just not the preferred one!

...okay, so she got the name wrong, but at least she was close, and she confirmed with you. I'd say it was a long way from being in the "dumbest" category.

The patronising "education" seemed a little unnecessary to me... along the lines of "me more smrt than checkout chick."
Staffer logs into the PC in her area and types "Karachi Pressure Washer" and of course nothing comes up.
I explained to her that Karachi is a city in Pakistan - the brand we are looking for is Karcher.
...and you've never misread a word, or has your brain read word X but process as word Y?
After 10 mins of waiting I get fed up and go to the Customer Service counter and ask for help.
Staffer walks with me to the pressure washer area, sees nothing of the items that I am looking for and says "I guess we don't have any of the items"
Okay, so what makes the out of stock situation the clerk's fault, and how does this fall into the category of "dumbest"?

The person typed the wrong name into the computer, then when they typed the correct name, they were showing out of stock...but you insisted they look further, which they did.

Cool story, brah

Well...this is quite the patronizing post isn't it?

Instead of schooling the clerk that Karachi is a city in Pakistan you could have simply let her know she had the incorrect spelling of the product she was searching for. Guaranteed she doesn't give a flip where Karachi is.

But kudos to you for being error proof.

OP, if that’s your idea of dumbest sales staff then I rather deal with these types of “dumb” sales staff any day.

So what if someone calls romaine lettuce as Romanian lettuce, at least it’s close enough. And so what if someone got the spelling wrong for Karcher and called it Karachi, you being pedantic in your correcting them just comes off as a show off know-it-all.

Maybe you’re a delight in real life, but your posts comes off as judgemental and douchey.
