For instance, the Sony X505 Extreme. This was introduced LAST YEAR in Japan, and it was a carbon fiber body laptop, weighing in at 780 grams with the battery installed (1.72 lbs).
but innovative laptops like the sony x505 comes at the expense of standarderized components. this makes it harder to put in memory upgrades, swappable drives, etc..

Anyone think of Asus?

Their noteboks in Asia are super nice. I am using the A2K, similar to the Ferrari earlier model with A64 3400+ 1GB RAM, 60GB HD, Mobility 9700 Pro 128MB dedicated

Of course, I'm not saying we should all run out and buy Japanese laptops. But I really wish companies had the guts to try new things like they do over there. Cutthroat competition is good for prices, but it's terrible for originality, because people stick to the "ain't broke don't fix it" formula and keep churning out trash technology items which just regurgitate the same old crap year after year after year.

What's the coolest new feature we can see in today's laptops? Or cell phones? NOTHING. Or very little. Why? Because costs are so damn important that they won't DARE put in new features that would raise the price.

Of course, I'm being a hypocrite considering I'm posting this on a website which helps people find the lowest prices. :) Enough of my rant :)

Your links don't have much useful information (it's all in Japanese).. but I do think I can make a general point based on the specs you've given for the first laptop, and Sony laptops in general for the latter... and that is, these are overpriced, underpowered laptops.

Transmeta CPUs are by no means speed demons, and a Radeon 7500 is basically bottom of the barrel nowadays. 10.4" screen is sub-par as well. There's something to be said for going with a lightweight laptop for portability, but the Sharp one takes that beyond reason. For the price premium you will pay for the portability (I'm not entirely sure of this - there's no price listed.. at least, not in English), it's not a laptop the majority of people will be interested in (it's much more of a niche market product).

Sony laptops are - and have always been - greatly overpriced.. and I'll bet the one you mention above is no exception.

There are few sites available that discuss those in English, but there's always Google and Babelfish, and I figured someone would actually want to use it.

Let me address the points you state.

First of all, I don't consider the glorified paperweights that we have widely available here as "laptops". A large percentage of laptops sold here in North America are over 6 - 7 pounds, and defy any possible stretching of the word "portable". In my specific case, I am much more interested in portability in a mobile device, and that ALWAYS comes at a cost. It's totally true that they will have less power and will cost more, but you're getting PORTABILITY, which you are NOT getting with the typical widely available machine. Hell, if you notice, many laptops even use desktop CPUs - what is the point, I ask?

I believe you cannot disagree that it's much more technologically challenging, and hence respectable and admirable, to produce a laptop that is smaller and lighter, rather than one that is large and bulky. Evidently, you cannot have a P4 with a Radeon X800 in a small form factor - but if you look at it objectively, the laptops I presented actually push the envelope of current technology, which is something that, again, I believe few manufacturers do in North America.

Obviously, if you want a laptop with a 17" screen that you can't take anywhere (or if you don't care that your supposedly portable device weighs more than the amount of food you consume in a day), there's no point in this discussion.

Incidentally, those laptops I mentioned were in the $2,000 - $2,200 range.

How about a Hyundai laptop?

Hyundai Mlife 270S
A new entrant to the Indian laptop market, Hyundai Mlife 270S has all the basic features one would like in a laptop. At Rs 46K, it is the cheapest laptop in this category. The notebook offers good connectivity options with all kinds of ports including IrDA, FireWire, parallel and PS/2 ports. Though all-important options are there, they
