Additional fees that used car dealerships add

Hi ,
My brother was looking for a used car and bought a CRV recently . He negotiated the price - 24k and told me that his final payment is going to be 650$ with 8% interest for 60 months. This did not make sense to me initially(I was expecting payment to be about 450$) but then he told me that they added other fees like GAP insurance etc.

He did not share his final invoice , but I am curious on what fees used car dealers add these days and what fees are OK and what are rip-offs .

Thanks

wow. Total obligation over 60 months = $39,000 ($6,850 in interests inclusive)

For monthly $650 payment over 5 yrs @ 8%. He is borrowing $32,200.

Assuming $0 down. So, if the used car itself is $24,000 + 12% taxes (Manitoba) = $26,880. This means he is paying some kinds of fees/charges of $5,320 (or $4,750 + 12% taxes).

Assuming OP's brother is also from Manitoba

Certain dealerships are taking advantage of new international students by adding crazy gap insurance. Just search tiktok.

And this is why the retail vehicle industry will always be regarded as the scum of the earth no matter how hard they try to improve their image.

... government issued the Manitoba dealers a license to print money (by offering dealers they can sell gap insurance). lol. I see don't know how the dealers calculate this gap insurance premium + how those staff insurance agents contributed to the added fees, mind you the owner is still required to obtain regular insurance on the car as well.

it is 2017 CRV EX , with 100k kms . price (24k) seems to be fine but with all those added fees , he surely got ripped .

I personally bought brand new CX5 GS in 2021 , and if I have went with finance it would be about 570 for 60 months . And he got a 5-6 year old used car with 650$ payments .

I don't know why people buy used car with such bad deals .

Can he do anything now , like GAP insurance refund etc ? Deal is signed and he got the car already ..

First, he should have a good look at what he is paying in fees & gap insurance and then go from there. If dealer charged him like $1250 - $1500 in gap insurance over the 5 yrs, then perhaps, he can consider leaving it (peace of mind). But that still leaves about $4,000 of unknown fees to explain.

He already took delivery. It's his now. Live and learn... hopefully.

“This change will make a great difference for our members,” Geoff Sine, executive director of the Manitoba Motor Dealers Association, said in a statement. “It gives them another tool that can be used to better protect their customers in case of an accident and will help customers avoid financial hardship.”

I suggest this would be more correct:

This change will make a great difference for our dealers. It gives them another tool that can be used to better overcharge their customers which in the end will cause customers financial hardship.

F&I employees are already licking their chops.

This is actually pretty useful on new cars and is free on most leases.

Used cars, especially ones that are 6 years old, not so much.

No it is not "pretty useful" on new cars. Just get proper insurance with depreciation coverage. Far cheaper than GAP

Agreed and I'm pleased that they're an option. Unfortunately, they represent a mere fraction of all used cars sold.
