Purchasing a used trailer

Hi,

I tried googling but I'm finding it difficult to get a definitive answer.

I would like to buy a used trailer, from my understanding the current owner will have ownership for the trailer which will be signed and given to me. What am I supposed to do about plates for bringing the trailer home? Since I'm going some distance I plan to look at the trailer and purchase it in one trip.

Thanks.

edit: just to add it's a 4x8 utility trailer.

Get the ownership transferred into your name at a Service Ontario location, pay taxes and get a plate. Affix plate and drive off. You'll also have to complete a safety inspection.

What if Service Ontario is not open when I pick up trailer?

From what I've ready everywhere it does not need a safety inspection... where is this information coming from?

Documents for registering a used trailer (previously registered in Ontario)
Bring the following documents to the ServiceOntario centre:

vehicle portion of permit
bill of sale
driver’s licence or other government-issued identification (e.g. your passport )
plate portion of permit from your previous trailer (if you owned one before this purchase)

Ok I understand that part.

Lets try this:

Can I tow a trailer without a plate for 'x' number of kms/days after purchasing like you can with a car?

So go when it is open? You already know what the other option is, so why ask.

I also posted before you edited your post, wasn't sure what kind of trailer. Read more about trailers and safety standards here: https://www.firstplacetrailer.ca/yellow ... s-ontario/

We just bought a used camper trailer so we went through this last week. We took the trailer with the previous owner's license plate and ownership signed over to us, then did the transfer the next day Service Ontario was open. We brought the old license plate and ownership back to the previous owner afterwards.

It's still best to do it in advance of picking up the trailer.

You don't need a safety on the trailer. You cannot drive it anywhere without a license plate on it.

You could " borrow " a trailer plate off a friend and take the chance you will not be pulled over OR buy the trailer and give the person $10 for the plate and drive it straight home. Again hoping you do not get pulled over and change it over ASAP after getting it home.

I trust you are not going to buying the trailer to load it up with crap and bring it home..... If so, wait to buy when a Service Ontario location is open.

Thanks for the advice, the seller has actually offered to take the drive and drop it off at my house so it actually works out well for me.
