As the title suggests - my folks are looking to buy a new sedan. Nothing fancy is needed, nor are they at all picky about make/model (they just want something "new"). What are some good options they can consider without having to wait on a 6 month waiting list or something along those lines? Budget is around ~$40k if that helps, and they're only interested in a 4 door sedan (no SUVs, vans, trucks, etc.)

Did you check the dealers for Honda Accords?

4 door sedans are way less popular now with everyone and their dog wanting a CRV/Rav4.

Interesting find, thanks!

Nope, haven't checked yet - but glad to know 4 door sedans are relatively less popular, because that's the only thing my folks want...lol

Good question, OP.
I would personally recommend Kia Forte/Optima (high chance of availability if you shop around) and Hyundai Elantra/Sonata (less chance to find). For sure only ICEs can be obtained within a month, electrified cars will probably need a reservation with at least 6 months waiting time.

Please keep us updated about what you find. I am in the same boat.
Good luck

Hard to beat the Malibu for availability and value. The Accord is the better vehicle and would be my pick in this segment but the Malibu Premier with the 2.0T engine is a solid buy for the under $40k buyer. Here's one in my neck of the woods: https://www.surgenorbarrhaven.com/new/vehicle/2022-chevrolet-malibu-premier-id11690327.htm. Cooled leather seats is a nice feature - especially with black leather. But the base models with the 1.5T and the CVT must be avoided at all costs.

OP: FWIW, my brother recently bought a Sonata and that thing is not only fugly, it's just an awful car. He neither likes nor dislikes it and that pretty much sums up a lot of sedans in this segment.

I would think getting a gas version of the Camry should not be too long of a wait. You might find some current year ones and getting an LE will be cheaper as for 2023 the SE is the base trim and a $3000 price hike. You can also get an AWD on the Camry so that you have better winter performance (when paired with Good winter tires).

Minimum of six months for the Camry, unfortunately, and up to a year to 18 months for the hybrids.

No matter what, I would not pick any Korean brands even if there is no wait. Garbage quality, imo.

I don't know if we can link to Reddit in RFD but there's a Toyota dealership employee who posts wait times over there and - as of mid July - it was 6-7 months.

My mind disagrees with that opinion but my gut agrees. Since there's choice, I just generally avoid.

Was sorely tempted by a Kia Stinger I have to admit.

Wait Malibu is $40k these days? Ugh. I don't think I'll ever get over the price new cars anymore. First of all they've been insanely priced for years; secondly they just keep going up, up, up!

I get that it's larger now, basically takes the place of the Impala but even forty kilodollars for Impala seems like a lot to me. Used to be able to get an A4 for this kind of money...
No longer posting on RFD. Will answer PMs from time to time, if anyone needs help/advice/etc.

Less so the Malibu's issue and more a GM issue. Ultimately the Malibu is basically a $25K car in LS trim and a bit more in the LT form.

The issue is GM's "Premier" trim pricing, even before the pandemic the pricing on Premier trim Chevrolets was insane. Imagine spending over $30K for a crappy 2020 Trax...yes GM axed that trim after they realized nobody was stupid enough to buy the Premier Trax for the prices they were charging. Similar issue with the Cruze's "Premier" trims too though less egregious than the Trax's.

Have to agree, you never know which model will burst into flames next. So far its been what the Iconic, Kona, Sonata, Santa Fe, Tuscon, Elantra, Palisade, Optima, Sorento, Sportage, Telluride....

"Used to" being the operative language. A4s start at closer to $50k right now.

I'm not an advocate for the Malibu but I will say that with the 2.0T engine, it does a sub 6 0-60 and is pretty roomy for passengers and cargo - it has great headroom and front and rear shoulder room. Plus, its styling is inoffensive.

I know your parent's budget is around 40k. Like @hightech suggested, Toyota Camry LE for under 30k + tax is their best bet.

Malibu is basically THE bottom of the barrel sedan that was selling for around $20k 3 or 4 years ago.

Base Malibu starts at $25,600. Add fees and taxes. So, nobody needs to spend another $10k to upgrade to a larger engine and features if they don’t need to.

Same $3000 factory rebate applies to base trim too on cash purchase. Something may be worth considering perhaps.
